Lingoda Review - Online Language Learning School

Everyone looking to learn a new language knows how popular online platforms and software are becoming. We are going to take a deeper look at a fairly new language tutoring platform called Lingoda!

Lingoda was founded in 2013 in Berlin, maybe they know the guys over at Babbel. The founders are two German brother entrepreneurs, Fabian and Felix Wunderlich. Lingoda is definitely heading in the right direction as they have secured funding on 3 separate occasions. That means they have money backing them to invest in the product.

Lingoda’s online lessons are taught based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The levels range from A1-C2, this shows that their lessons are well structured and aren’t just made up for each class. They have actually come up with the teaching material themselves.

In our Lingoda review, we will highlight which areas we think they should be improving and what we currently think is working great for them. Keep reading about the new online language school!

Languages available on Lingoda

Let us jump straight into which languages they currently offer. There are four options that you can choose from with Lingoda. Check them out below:

  • German
  • Spanish
  • French
  • English

The amount of languages is even less than Rype, who currently offer seven. Only having four languages on offer is a bit disappointing. For learning other languages we will just keep on using the Italki marketplace.

We have read elsewhere online that they won’t be offering any new languages anytime soon. Which is a bit of a shame, although they clearly want to perfect their product before expanding the Lingoda languages offering. When you look at their teaching material you do realise why they only have 4 languages offered. They would have to plan thousands of lessons before they can launch a new language.

How Does It Work?

Lingoda class themselves as one of the first online language schools. This differs from italki who allow online language tutors to promote their services, Lingoda employs teachers. You will be using Adobe Connect or Skype to join the online classes, where you will be learning via 1-to-1 or in a small group of no more than 5 people. If you don’t want to be seen you can connect only via audio, video isn’t mandatory.

Something that is great about Lingoda is that you will have a personal language advisor assigned to you. They are there to give you learning tips, put you in relevant classes based on what you want to learn and your current level. This addition gives it a personal touch which is nice.

At the end of each lesson, the online language tutor will give feedback on your ability to your personal advisor. They will then pass this on to you. Some people may like this, we prefer having feedback directly from the tutor.

How Much Does it Cost?

The Lingoda prices differ depending on a few variants. These are the language that you are looking to learn, whether you want to learn privately, in a group or a mix of the two. The mix is what they call their standard package. They then have three different packages for each of these selections, these are basic, pro and premium.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of each package we would like to clear up the difference between group classes and private lessons.

  • Group – The lesson will be an hour long and you will be in a class that contains anywhere from 1-5 students.

Private – These lessons are one hour long 1-to-1 sessions with a dedicated online language teacher.

As we previously mentioned the standard package comes with both group and private lessons. We will highlight the full details of each package:

  • Basic – 10 group classes and 1 private class
  • Pro – 20 group classes and 2 private classes
  • Premium – 30 group classes and 3 private classes

German Spanish French
Basic $129 a month $119 a month $119 a month
Pro $199 a month $179 a month $179 a month
Premium $329 a month $289 a month $289 a month

If you don’t like the idea of group lessons you can choose the Lingoda private package. You will receive 1-to-1 lessons from dedicated teachers. It’s worth noting that you might not be able to learn with the same teacher on every private lesson.

  • Basic – 5 private classes
  • Pro – 10 private classes
  • Premium – 15 private classes

German Spanish French
Basic $129 a month $119 a month $119 a month
Pro $249 a month $219 a month $219 a month
Premium $349 a month $319 a month $319 a month

This package is for the learners that like to be in a classroom feeling environment. You will be able to hear the online language teacher explaining grammar, pronunciation etc to other students in the group as well as yourself.

  • Basic – 10 group classes
  • Pro – 20 group classes
  • Premium – 30 group classes

German Spanish French
Basic $109 a month $89 a month $89 a month
Pro $189 a month $169 a month $169 a month
Premium $249 a month $219 a month $219 a month

Learning English

If you are looking to take any of the Lingoda English packages then they will be slightly different to the other 3 language packages on offer. Instead, the packages for English are called Light, Standard and Intensive. You will see the full prices and what each package contains in the table below.

Light Standard Intensive
Group $89 a month - 10 group classes $169 a month - 20 group classes $219 a month - 30 group classes
Combo $119 a month - 8 group classes, 2 private classes $239 a month - 15 group classes, 5 private classes $359 a month - 20 group classes, 10 private classes
Private $219 a month - 10 private classes $409 a month - 20 private classes $599 a month - 30 private classes

Lingoda Marathon

At Lingoda, they have set up what they call a language marathon. This consists of dedicating so many days a month to learning your target language. If you do manage to complete the Lingoda marathon you will receive a refund for 50 or 100% based on which package you chose. To take part you will have to pay an entry fee of €5. You then have the choice of which language and package you want to go ahead with. The packages are called half marathon or full. between half marathon or full. Each marathon starts on a certain date and finishes 3 months from your initial lesson.

Half Marathon

The half marathon is the cheaper of the two options as you commit to half the amount of lessons you would with the full. Over the 3 months, you will have 45 language lessons. This is broken down into 15 lessons a month. For this package, the cost will be €99 a month. Which works out to be €6.60 per lesson.

Lingoda claims that if you manage to finish the half marathon you will have advanced half a CEFR level in your language. On top of that, if you do complete the course you will be refunded 50% of the 3-month subscription! It is a great way to commit and 15 lessons a month is certainly doable, this is perfect for people looking to learn fast.

Full Marathon

Let us also give you the details of Lingoda’s full marathon now. Over the 3 month period, you will be required to book and attend 30 lessons a month to complete it. This is definitely a bit trickier than the half marathon, due to people being unable to find an hour a day to focus on learning a language. The course will cost €189 a month, making it only slightly cheaper per lesson (€6.30) than the half marathon.

The positive perspective of the full marathon is that you will receive a 100% refund if completed. Not only that, you will also see your proficiency greatly improving throughout the course duration. This is one way to start mastering your target language!

Summing Up

As Lingoda hasn’t been around for that long they are clearly in the test and amend stage of any young business. That definitely doesn’t mean that the product that they offer is bad though. If you are looking to learn one of their 4 offered languages fast, then we believe Lingoda can be a great place to learn. Make sure to book your lessons well in advance due to classes filling up.

The fact that you can be wherever you want and still learn a language with them is amazing. Just make sure that you have a stable internet connection.

Hopefully, in the future, the team at Lingoda will start to create new language courses. We don’t think that we are the only ones that want them to start offering other languages either.
